What causes acne?

Acne is a complex problem involving a multitude of factors. It can be caused by an overproduction of oil (sebum) from the skin’s oil glands, the buildup of dead skin cells, and the presence of bacteria. As the bacteria multiply, they can trigger an immune response, causing inflammation and redness. Stress, diet, genetics, hormones, and certain medications can also contribute to the development of acne.

Different methods of skin resurfacing are effective for acne scars. Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin and softens the appearance of the scar by stimulating collagen production and organization. A medium or deep chemical peel often treats sun damage and skin blemishes. Laser resurfacing can stimulate collagen and elastic fibers, promoting healing and new skin growth. Microneedling also offers gradual improvements in scar appearance with minimal downtime.

Punch excision is a more focused, minor procedure to address individual acne scars, repairing the wound with stitches or a skin graft. Another subcision technique involves your doctor inserting needles under the skin to loosen fibers below a scar to help improve its appearance.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm, Radiesse, and Restylane are popular treatments for acne scars. Fillers can reduce the appearance of a specific type of scars, improving the overall texture of your skin.
