EYELID SURGERY
When to consider an eyelid surgery
Sagging eyelids are a common and frustrating cosmetic concern that affects many individuals. The delicate skin surrounding the eyes is thinner than any other body part, making it susceptible to stretching and damage. Consequently, it can appear to age more rapidly than the rest of the face, developing saggy, droopy eyelids or under-eye bags. Various factors contribute to this issue, including prolonged sun exposure, dryness, and the natural decline of skin elasticity.
Fortunately, a solution can restore a more revitalized and youthful appearance: the eyelid lift procedure, also known as blepharoplasty. This surgical intervention specifically targets rejuvenating the skin and soft tissues surrounding the eyes, effectively addressing the concerns associated with sagging eyelids. Whether performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, eyelid surgery involves the careful removal or repositioning of drooping skin and the elimination of under-eye bags. Additionally, the procedure includes tightening the skin, creating a more lifted and refreshed look.
By opting for eyelid surgery, individuals can regain self-confidence and achieve a more youthful and rested appearance. This cosmetic correction is designed to address the unique characteristics of the eye area and restore a harmonious balance to the face. With the removal of excess skin and the repositioning of tissue, the eyes are rejuvenated, creating a noticeable improvement in the overall facial aesthetics. Whether the motivation is to combat the signs of aging or enhance one’s natural features, blepharoplasty can provide the desired results and help individuals feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance.
How It Helps
An eyelid lift addresses the loose or sagging skin that creates folds and detracts from the natural contour of the upper eyelid. A lower blepharoplasty reduces the lower eye bags and excess skin of the lower eyelid. Eyelid surgery enhances the appearance of the eyes, opening them up to restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
BEFORE
What to Expect Before An Eyelid Lift
During the eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) consultation, double-board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Diana Ponsky will examine and photograph your facial anatomy and discuss your concerns and goals. It may be recommended that you take certain medications or adjust your current medications in preparation for the procedure, such as avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as these can increase bleeding and bruising.
DURING
What to expect during a blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, whereas lower eyelid surgery is often more comfortable with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The incision for upper eyelid surgery is hidden within the natural crease. The incision for lower eyelid surgery is either hidden on the inner surface of the eyelid or just below the eyelashes. The incisions typically heal very well and become nearly invisible once healed. Upper and lower eyelid surgery addresses excess skin and fat pads, which are oftentimes hereditary and become more apparent with aging.
AFTER
What to expect after an eye lift
Initial healing may include swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes, and discomfort. Lubricating drops or ointment and cold compresses are applied for comfort and to minimize swelling. Dr. Ponsky and her clinical team will review post-procedure care instructions and any recommended medications with you. Sutures are removed 1 week after the procedure. After one week, the bruising and swelling is not typically noticeable to others. The appearance of your eyelids will continue to improve as swelling gradually resolves, resulting in a refreshed, well-rested look.
